It's long puzzled me why, on the day of the football transfer deadline clubs decide almost last minute, that they need at least 5 more players, and ensue chasing them. It's almost like me and my coursework.
This year however, it seems one club is taking a different approach, Manchester United, despite the owner's supposed debt the club have already signed former Blackburn defensive hot prospect Phil Jones for £16.5m, and united are also on the verge of signing Aston Villa's Want-away midfield maestro, Ashley Young for around £10m, which is a steal considering his pre-season value was around £25m. The deal is set to be completed following the return of the footballing moguls and wheeler dealers from their holidays.
Following the eventual retirement of Paul Scholes, and Edwin Van Der Sar and the probable retirement of love-rat Ryan Giggs, Sir Alex has looked to revamp the English Premier League Champions' with these potential signings.
Sir Fergie is also supposedly after Arsenal's Samir Nasri, however the Gunners' gaffer - Arsene Wenger, says the club will not sell him. However, with Arsenal's trophy cabinet collecting nothing except dust for another season, Nasri may well wish to leave for the more successful rivals Manchester United.
David De Gea is too being lined up to fill the very large boots and gloves of retiring keeper Van Der Sar, after United agreed a £17m deal with Athletico Madrid to acquire the Spanish Shot-stopper's talents.
United have also been looking at other targets such as Tottenham's Luka Modric, Lens' promising 18 year old full back Raphael Varane and also Udinese's £30m rated winger Alexis Sanchez, but will have to pay top dollar for him, and are in competition with the European Champions Barcelona and FA cup holders and cross-town rivals Manchester City.
United will have to capture many of their targets this summer in order to maintain their Premier League crown, with numerous players leaving, for retirement or to other clubs (Sunderland have offered £12m for Darren Gibson, Wes Brown and John O'shea) whether these players will leave is yet to be seen, but I suppose it provides a reason why they have started spending so early...
One thing is for certain though, if any other team is looking to challenge the champions next year, they had better get training or spending, whilst Fergie sets the foundation out for his next and probably final Manchester United wonder-team.
